A 4-year-old boy who was riding a scooter with his father was hit by a car and died

A 4-year-old boy who was riding on the back of a scooter with his father in the Bronx on Sunday night was hit and killed by a car, according to the New York Police Department.

Four-year-old Mario Rosario was with his father in the back of a stolen scooter when he was hit by a car on Bailey Avenue near 193rd Street, police said. The scooter collided with a passenger car while trying to get in front of the sedan during a turn.

Rosario suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police said the 51-year-old driver was arrested at the scene for driving without a license, but the driver said his license was only suspended for one month due to unpaid child support.

The driver of the car says the scooter came very fast when it crashed. When the crash happened, his father started screaming and banging the car, he said. According to the driver, he jumped out of the car and tried to help the boy feel a pulse and perform CPR.

Rosario’s father will be charged with endangering the child’s welfare and possessing stolen property. The driver was charged with driving a vehicle with a suspended license.
