The Yankees will be without Aroldis Chapman in the near future as the veteran closer recovers from a foot infection.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Saturday that the club has placed the left-handed player on the 15-day injured list because of an illness Chapman recently developed after getting a tattoo on his leg. His last play was on August 19, in a 4–0 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing one earned run and two walks in 1/3 innings while allowing one out.
Chapman, who made his seventh All-Star appearance last year, has had a trying season in 2022, with the addition of an unexpected IL stint stemming from his usual day-to-day activities. In addition to his on-field struggles, the left-hander landed in IL in May with Achilles tendonitis, missing 38 games before returning on July 2.
Chapman, who is entering the final year of a five-year contract signed in 2017, has cooled considerably in recent months after starting the season with 10.1 innings. Chapman is 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA, 35 strikeouts, and 9 saves in 36 games for the Yankees (78-48), which leads the league East.
