ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – When singer-songwriter Charles Esten isn’t entertaining audiences on stage, he plays evil father Ward Cameron in the Netflix hit The Outer Banks.
“We’re almost through Season 3 and it’s been a wild, wild ride.
It’s a big change and a tribute to his previous lead role playing country singer Deacon Claiborne on TV’s “Nashville.”
Esten had a good laugh when WDBJ7 asked if villain Ward Cameron would be breaking into country tunes in “Outer Banks.”
“I have a pretty vivid imagination. I can’t for the life of me think of a way to play a song that’s soft and sentimental about it.It would be difficult,” he says.
Ward doesn’t sing, but Esten does.
He is thrilled to be back on tour at The Coves Amphitheater at Union Hall on Saturday, September 10th.
“I’m a lucky guy who gets to play his music when he has time.
Having moved to Alexandria as a child and having spent time with his grandfather in Buchanan, Virginia holds a special place for him.
His love for his grandfather is evident in his music, especially songs like “Do You Good.”
“That’s why I love playing in the mountains of Virginia. He was born near Roanoke in Buchanan. So it means a lot to me and has inspired me a lot over the years.
Speaking of family, his wife, Patti, works with him.
“She’s definitely become a fan favorite. I’m really happy that people are seeing her on the side of the stage and walking around and getting to know her on live streams and on social media. Me. is a big fan of her,” says Esten.
The couple also share a labor of love and support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“We have a daughter who was diagnosed with leukemia when she was two and a half, so together we have been dedicated to the leukemia and lymphoma community and their Light the Night campaign. I think it will be 10 years soon,” says Esten.
Charity work, TV shows and music keep Esten busy.
One of his new songs is “Worst Day,” a duet with singer Julia Cole.
When it comes to his live shows, Esten likes to keep the moment off the cuff.
“You never know what the crowd will bring in a given moment, so if there is a vibe in that moment, it’s a partnership. Come on, it’s going to be professional, it’s not just sitting around a campfire, but it’s going to be like sitting around a campfire,” he says.
Once again, Esten’s show will take place on September 10th at 7pm at The Coves Amphitheater at Union Hall near Smith Mountain Lake.
