Today is the first day of school for Asbury Park students, and uniforms are mandatory for the first time in 12 years.
Thurgood Marshall Primary School uniforms made students and parents smile. There were a few people who didn’t follow the rules, but the district has a plan.
“It will be a bridge to maintain homeostasis among all students. Give it a sense of inclusion,” says principal Dr. Lauren Schultz.
Last year, Schulze helped pick out uniforms.
“Each principal could actually sit down with a committee member and ask the students what color shirt they would like for their uniform,” says Schulze. “What color pants? We reached the elementary school consensus.”
Columbia blue top and navy bottoms for students in pre-K through 3rd grade. Upper Elementary School students in grades 4-6 are required to wear black tops with khaki bottoms. Her 7th through 8th graders wear white tops with khaki bottoms. High school students wear Columbia blue tops and khaki bottoms.
The school district says this will improve the district’s culture.
