New Jersey food distributor Kolym Industries is recalling four k-cup products due to the presence of peanut allergens in their peanut butter and hot cocoa flavors, the Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday.
Despite being peanut butter flavored, the hot cocoa in question does not contain peanut allergens. and a recall was triggered.
No illnesses or injuries have been reported from peanut allergens.
The four affected products are:
— Cocoa de Aroma 24 count 12.7 oz carton variety of K-cups.
— 24 count 12.7 oz carton of Smart Sips Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa K-Cups.
— 24 count 12.7 oz carton of Jersey Charm Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa K-cups.
— 24 Count 12.7 oz Carton of Colonial Coffee Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa K-Cups.
Products were shipped to resellers between January 11, 2021 and November 30, 2022. Only items with an expiration date between his 01/11/2023 and 01/11/2025 will be affected.
The presence of the peanut allergen was so minor that it escaped previous detection, and as a result, the downstream distributors of the four k-cup products did not know to declare the presence of peanuts.
“Tests conducted by Colim indicated that levels may have been below detection limits. It turned out to be a malfunction,” the FDA recall notice said.
The documentation process was then amended to allow for additional safety checks and corrective actions, including discontinuing offending fragrance ingredients.
