Cubs top contender Brenen Davis returns to Triple-A Iowa

Cubs top contender Brenen Davis has returned to Triple-A Iowa after missing overtime after undergoing back surgery earlier this season.

Davis, who recently completed his rehab assignment, was in the starting lineup for the I-Cubs in Tuesday’s 12-game road trip opener against the Columbus Clippers.

Davis, who has been ranked by evaluators as the Cubs’ frontrunner to start this season, was placed on the injured reserve list with a back problem after playing in Iowa on May 3, leading to surgery.

He returned to action two weeks ago, appearing in 10 games in rehab duties with the ACL Cubs and Single-A South Bend.

Davis, who started the season as a No. 15 contender in the MLB pipeline and was promoted to No. 51 after injury, had the potential to make his big league debut this summer before going to IL.

The 22-year-old is expected to play in the upcoming Arizona Fall League after just 131 plate appearances this season due to injury.
