The deadline for 9/11 first responders exposed to toxic dust at ground zero to secure benefits with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board is this Sunday.
Anton Volynski, a Greenport volunteer firefighter, was one of thousands of first responders to the wreckage of the World Trade Center.
“We just did what we were supposed to do.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer more than 20 years after the attack, but received disability benefits to help with treatment after filing a claim with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board.
Volinski is urging other September 11 first responders to register with the board by the deadline.
“You took your life into your own hands when you went there. The best thing to do now is get compensated,” says Wolinski.
9/11 benefits attorney Beth Jabron says benefits apply to all first responders, even if they are outside the NYPD or FDNY.
Disability benefits include lost wages and accidental death benefits for family members in the event of the applicant’s death.
