Ngozi Okaro, executive director of Custom Collaborative, expects fashion law, and the industry at large, to become more ambitious in imagining what is possible. “What are we doing to grow and expand the skills of clothing manufacturers and keep New York City as the fashion capital for innovation?” she says. “We want to be able to do something positive when it comes to investing in clothing manufacturers.”
Bédat does not claim that fashion law, or any single law, is or is a panacea. “It has to be the strongest, most aggressive piece of legislation that can be passed, and that is what is presented here,” she says.
But the realm of possibility automatically expands when more people are involved in imagining them, says McGuire. Things expand.”
As the fashion law moves forward, supporters are optimistic about its prospects. Beda said her inbox was flooded with interest in the bill, including from other states and jurisdictions that wanted to consider replicating it. It is said that Biaggi says it will take a lot of work, but is confident it will pass, calling out the value of having Stella McCartney on board, saying, “We’re gaining momentum and maybe we’re As a way into spaces that might not be welcome without it.”
Observers are watching who is involved in the final draft of the bill, and a number of organizations are working to draft proposed amendments. “If the fashion industry is meant to benefit from the impacts of the climate crisis, which has had a major impact first, and those most affected, invite them into the room. So why not discuss how we can create a solution that will come out of this bill?” says McGuire.
“I think it’s a good starting point,” says Okaro. “I’m glad it’s on the agenda for 2022. Whether we’re in New York or abroad, we’re committed to making the laws necessary to protect black and brown communities and workers. I hope we can all work together.”
