The crew began emergency work on Route 440 in Hudson County. This is a project that is expected to close part of the road for at least two weeks.
An inspection revealed a partial collapse of the 100-year-old sewer that was the reason for its construction. Excavation work will begin Tuesday night, officials said. This is near the border of Bayonne and Jersey City.
Southbound Route 440 will divert from Communipaw Avenue to Danforth Avenue, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Northbound diverts Bayonne-Jersey City route 185 to Danforth Avenue.
“This job will be done 24/7 until it’s done. We’re looking at maybe 15 days from today, weather permitting. Obviously, if it’s done by then, it’s all good.” It’s the best,” says Greg Kierce. Jersey City Emergency Management Agency.
With traffic cut off in the area, local business owners like Saleem Salloum are trying to create their own roadmaps to avoid potential loss of income.
“We have to cut staff a little bit, cut time and deliveries. “I’m not pissing myself off. I’m just trying to take it in every day.”
Officials say crew members should be aware of the gas and water mains running under the area that supplies Bayonne with water.
