Ezra Furman has always identified with Ally Sheedy’s character in The Breakfast Club.
The 35-year-old singer, who came out as transgender last year, is a big fan of John Hughes’ 1985 cult classic and the actress’ “cool, outsider alter ego, Allison Reynolds.”
Speaking to Esquire, Ezra, who sings the song ‘Ally Sheedy in the Breakfast Club’ on his new album ‘All of Us Flames’, said: Ally Sheedy’s character has always been a favorite of mine.
“She’s growing her nails in such a cool, outsider and feminine way.
“I wanted to be like her, but in reality, the exact same thing is in me.”
However, Ezra didn’t like the characters turning into preppys at the end of the film.
she said. Nobody likes that version of her.
“Again, I don’t want to be a snob about it.
“I don’t know what’s moving…She looks happy at the end.
“She’s not that cool, but she looks happy.”
Another track on the album, “Come Close,” reflects how Ezra let the “poison” he experienced as a queer “reach” her.
she said: In a way, people who are really lost.
“That broken feeling that comes from being a rejected creature.
“It’s important for queer people to say, ‘I don’t care what anyone thinks,’ but there’s more to it than that. It’s a big part of life.
“Transphobic voices, voices you can’t stop in your head.
“I think that song has that kind of feeling.”
