Not the Newark water main break this morning, but a ruptured underground firebreak spilling water on some streets.
The break took place around 1:30 am, just off Broad Street, near the old Prudential Building on Academy Street. It took me a while to find the shut off valve because of all the utilities.
“This is a high pressure fire line that feeds the Prudential Building, an eight-inch line.
Firefighters provide access to water for firefighters to fight fires on skyscrapers if needed.
“I don’t know of any flooded basements,” says Adeem. “But when underground pipes break, water tends to enter many of the utility’s underground manholes and conduits, and that water can travel to basements and he as far as a mile away.”
There was no loss of water service for residents or businesses.
I don’t know if any of the nearby basements got water from this.
