Food banks face a double pinch – rising food costs and increased demand for services

HONOLULU, Hawaii (KITV) — Hawaii Food Bank officials said they are in a double pinch as demand for their services has increased as well as the prices of their food offerings.

The Hawaii Food Bank CEO and president said food costs have increased more than 10% this year.

“We are seeing more and more families show up on our food distribution site.During the pandemic, many families were barely able to make a living, but these financial hardships have At the same time, food prices are rising to provide these free services,” said Amy Marvin, president of the Hawaii Food Bank.

She also said the organization could really stretch the dollar. Each dollar donated allows her to cover two or more meals.

“What we have to do now is spend more than we normally aim to cover these new costs when we buy food,” said Neil Char, director of the Hawaii Food Bank. It means that we have to raise funds.

The organization met outside the Waterfront Plaza and accepted both food and cash donations.

Another goal they have, they said, is food rescue. We also work with local grocers to source the freshest ingredients.

“Everything is really expensive when we go shopping ourselves, so it was really nice to give these groceries to people who especially need them right now. The cost of food, gas and everything else is high.” said food provider Jonathan Sipert.
