Food Truck Wednesdays are a summer staple at Gigi’s Playhouse on North Clinton Street in Fort Wayne. To expand Gigi’s Career Training Program, Gigi’s Genesis Health Bar Ambassadors are working with food truck owners who serve delicious food to the public while learning invaluable career and social skills.
“Our mission is to change the way the world views Down syndrome, and if we stay inside Gigi’s Playhouse, we’re not going to do that,” said Holly Tonak, executive director of Gigi’s Playhouse. I’m here.
Instead, Gigi’s ambassadors are out in parking lots and food trucks, serving delicious food and interacting with the public to learn valuable skills.
After graduating from Gigi University’s 15-week training program, Ambassadors will work at Gigi’s Genesis Health Bar, located inside Gigi’s Playhouse at 6081 N Clinton Street, Fort Wayne. According to Tonak, Food His Track Wednesdays was born because he was looking for a way to build on the skills he learned at the Health Bar. “We reached out to local food truck owners and thought this would be a great opportunity to use the same skill set in a different setting. They’re just having fun!”
Ambassador Kristy Meeks says she loves working at Traveling Tom’s coffee truck. “My favorite part is serving drinks, which is great.” Traveling Tom’s Coffee’s Haley Moore couldn’t be happier with the arrangement. “Kristy is quick to pick things up and has a great customer service,” she adds Moore, smiling.
Ambassador Cameron has worked hard at What the Fish Truck, which delivers crispy fish and delicious French fries to delighted customers. It’s amazing to see She added, “Cameron does a great job taking care of his customers. He’s Employee of the Month!”
According to Tonak, the overall theme of events like this is to show the public that people with Down’s syndrome can do anything, and that takes a little more time, and they could do it in a different way. “People with Down syndrome put their diagnostic name on their faces and you can quickly see that they have different abilities.” Said it helps. I always say that formulating and clarifying these terms is a triple whammy. So giving them space to say what they think and what they need to say every time you have a conversation will help improve their speech because they are using those muscles. Communication is everything, says Tonak.
The next Food Truck Wednesday is September 7th at 11am. – 2:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Gigi’s Playhouse on North Clinton Street. Food trucks from Wicked Good Cupcakes, Goodies Trap House, Bravas, WTFish and Whatcha Grindin’ serve great food and support the cause. Make a plan for you and your friends to stop by and see why Food Truck Wednesday is positive Fort Wayne.
