Gator Great Shane Matthews Joins Gators Sports Network as Football Analyst

GAINSVILLE, Fla. – Gator Great Shane Matthews will join the Florida Football Radio Team as a full-time analyst after providing color commentary on last season’s road games, the College Athletic Association and Florida Gators Sports Properties announced Thursday. Matthews and the newly hired “Gator Voice” Sean Kellywhich will be its first season in the booth this fall, debuting on Sept. 3 when Florida will take on Utah in the season opener at 7 p.m.

“I am very honored,” said Matthew. “I have big shoes with Lee McGriff. I have.”

Matthews will replace Lee McGriff, a Gator radio staple for 27 years who retired this spring. The former Gators quarterback has thrown for 74 touchdowns and over 9,000 passing yards in his career. A native of Cleveland, Mississippi, he won the SEC Player of the Year award in 1990 and 1991, and finished the 1991 season with his fifth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy.

After signing with the Chicago Bears in 1993, he had a 13-year NFL career, playing for six different teams during that time.

Matthews also hosts the “Pod Up With Matthews In The Morning” podcast on YouTube and Facebook Live every Monday through Friday, and appears on the radio show “Inside the Huddle” every Tuesday on ESPN 98.1/850 WRUF.

Pre-game, halftime and post-game show hosts Jeff Cardoso, former Gators baseball player, and sideline reporter Tate Casey, who won the 2006 and 2008 BCS National Championships in Florida, said: They will return to their respective roles this season.
