GREEN BAY, Wisconsin – With training camp complete, players uncomfortably resting in the Green Bay Packers’ roster bubble are only given one more chance to claim a spot on the 53-man roster. That’s his finale of Thursday night’s preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs.
A final cut to the 53-man roster is expected by 3 p.m. Tuesday. Including the 16-man practice squad that could be assembled Wednesday, general manager Brian Gutkunst sees the roster as 69.
This is true from a team’s point of view, even if not from a player’s point of view, each player is eligible to be promoted from the practice team three times. Or $11,500 per week versus about $39,000 per week. )
“I know everyone is focused on 53, but it’s actually more than 69, and the whole practice team and how that stacks up,” Gutekunst said. Over time, the amount of players they use and the teams they are playing with at the end of the season can be dramatic compared to the beginning of the season.

“I think there’s certainly something that I feel is the bare minimum for each position, but then with a 16-man practice team trying to maintain a best overall of 53 by the start. Season. That doesn’t mean it’ll be a best 53 going to Game 8, Game 12, and the playoffs.”
There seems to be an empty spot in half of the position group on Thursday night, and many things are on the table. Aside from an injury-hit Safety and an offensive line with injury issues, there seems to be some depth up and down the roster.
