A person detained at the Eric M. Taylor Center on Rikers Island died Monday, the New York City Department of Corrections said.
The person has not been identified and his death is under investigation, officials said.
DOC Commissioner Luis A. Molina issued the following statement: A preliminary internal investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. ”
This is the Rikers’ 12th death in custody this year. She, one of the inmates who contacted News 12, told reporter Katelynn Ulrich that she didn’t want to be number 13.
“We need to be more careful,” said Duquon Cassidy. “Take care of yourself more and try to get over it. If you see another inmate needing some kind of support or care, be aware.”
Cassidy says he was also held at the Eric M. Taylor Center but didn’t know who died.

A spokeswoman for NYC Health + Hospitals Correctional Health Services said they are working to provide more information about prison medical services.
