Today’s back to school tips and tricks are fun. It’s all about being organized. Here are some quick tips to get you started right now.

“I think people generally do better in organized spaces,” says Leigh Genkinger, a professional organizer.

Genkinger is also a busy mother of three.

“The first is creating a family calendar,” says Genkinger.

Activities, carpools, appointments, it’s all there. Then have a catchall bin ready.

“That way, each person can have one right next to the kitchen counter and, of course, one right next to the garbage can,” says Genkinger. “I think a lot of people struggle with what to keep and what to throw away. It is recommended.”

And if you don’t have a mudroom, no problem. Please create.

“It’s very easy,” says Genkinger. “We added a shipwrap to this wall and he added five hooks for the whole family. All the backpacks are hanging here. So they go home, empty their stuff, and I’ll bring my pack and jacket here.”

Let’s talk about clothes and color coding.

“When you know red goes with red and blue goes with blue, it’s a lot easier to put things away,” says Genkinger.

Before you go shopping for the back-to-school, check your inventory. See what fits and what doesn’t. Add a basket and create a label. One last thing.

“So I think it’s important that each child in the family has a separate place to do their homework,” says Genkinger.
