Care Provided at VA New Jersey Healthcare
Our LGBTQ+ Veterans Care Coordinator is available to answer your questions, advocate for your right to quality care, address care complaints and concerns, and help launch services for LGBTQ+ veterans. These include:
- Mental health services, including psychosocial evaluations for hormone therapy and gender confirmation surgery
- creative arts therapy
- hormone therapy
- gender-matching prostheses
- HIV and STI testing, counseling, and care, including PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for veterans at risk of HIV
- Other prevention, screening, health, and testing services
Policies and practices you should know

visit: A same-sex partner, family member, friend, or other individual may stay with the patient for emotional support during the patient’s stay.
Family definition: A “family member” may include individuals not legally related to the individual. Family members include spouses, domestic partners, heterosexual and same-sex partners.
Advance directives: Veterans can nominate any person as their care decision maker if they are unable to make these decisions themselves. This includes same-sex partners. Advance directive agents are selected by veterans and need not be biologically related.
Documentation of medical records: VA New Jersey maintains the confidentiality of information regarding sexual orientation, sexual behavior, and gender identity, just like any other personal health information.
Change of name or gender on record: Your name as it appears in your medical records reflects your real name. The gender in your medical record should reflect the gender you identified yourself with. You have the right to request that your name and gender be updated if necessary. There are established procedures with the VA Privacy Officer to change your name and gender.
