The injury-ridden New York Yankees placed infielder DJ LeMahieu on Thursday’s 10-day injured list with an inflammation in his right second toe.
LeMahieu had been dealing with an injury for several weeks, but until recently he played through discomfort, missing the first three games of the New York Series against Minnesota. Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes the issue really started to affect Lemmahue during the set of three games in Boston from Aug. 12-14.
One of New York’s most consistent hitters, the two-time batting champion went 12-0 in Tampa Bay last weekend and has been brawling at bat since that weekend at Fenway Park, posting a .143 batting average (70 vs. 10) had no extra hits. He has hit in his last 18 games.
Boone said. “I talk about them, they are like race cars.
The Yankees hoped their trusty Lemmahu could get away with IL. That outlook changed Thursday, with Boone pointing out that just getting through treatment and pain isn’t doing enough.
“It hurts. We talked about the braces he has. We talked about the treatments they do every day,” Boone said. “Are there other injections that are safe and effective? It’s all about what they talk about.”
The move dates back to Sept. 5 and opens up the possibility of LeMahieu’s return next Friday in Milwaukee.
“I’m obviously worried about that because I think the DJ is obviously putting him in danger. ‘Well, there’s that concern, but there’s also hope in that.'”
New York, which leads the AL East with five games going into Thursday, has 15 players in IL and has been hampered by a recent surge in injuries.

Matt Carpenter broke his left leg on a boot after rolling around the clubhouse on a scooter on Thursday.
Luis Severino (strained right latitude) allowed four hits in four innings and two runs in Double-A Somerset Wednesday. Boone said the right-hander could start rehab for one more game, but if not, he could return to his series after two games in Boston on Sept. 13–14. I said yes. Severino, who once had 19 wins, pitched for the last time in the majors on July 13.
