New Jersey community food bank hosts 24-hour packing event for those in need


Hillside, New Jersey (WABC) — New Jersey’s community food banks are the largest in the state and are in dire need of help as volunteers have dropped by almost 50% in the last two years.

Volunteering has declined significantly, although the need is still high.

Nicole Williams, of New Jersey’s Community Food Bank, said: “Volunteering has declined by about 44% since the start of the pandemic.

New Jersey’s community food banks are huge institutions.

“It’s about the size of six football fields,” Williams said.

It’s chock-full of donated and purchased food.

“Every dollar you donate helps us provide three nutritious meals,” Williams said.

So at Community Food Bank New Jersey, people are ready to help sort and pack.

“Masks, gloves and hand sanitizer are still required. Nurses are taking temperatures at the front door,” Williams said.

They organize fun events to help their neighbors by packing boxes.

Pac-a-thon begins at 9:00 am on Friday and lasts 24 hours until 9:00 am on Saturday.

“We expect over 250 people to attend,” said Jay Signorello of the Emerging Leaders Board.

Community food banks still run food drives to meet the need for fresh, nutritious food in much of New Jersey.

“If there are hungry children, there are hungry families, so we want to provide food to support everyone in the house,” Williams said.

“We know that where there are hungry children, there are hungry families at home,” Williams said.

Pack-A-Song is this Friday, but Community Food Banks are always happy to help!
