Sammy Boyd was the epitome of Asbury Park’s music and entertainment scene.
Sammy, a promoter and restaurateur, was a good friend of mine who died this week at the age of 75. His passion and love for the revitalization of Asbury Park was well known as he served on many committees and boards and oversaw its positive changes. It’s happening in the bustling Jersey music capital.
His love of music and good entertainment is evident in his ability to bring top notch music and entertainment to Asbury Park. Music legends such as Ronnie Spector, Darlene Love, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli, Gary US Bonds, Southside Johnny, The Weaklings Denny Laine of Wings, Tommy James, Leslie West of Mountain Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals, Pat Guadagno.
I have had the honor of hosting many of Sammy’s shows. It was always nice to see him and his big classic smile always calm backstage, even in the midst of the little messes and issues that always arise when promoting a show.
Sammy always stepped up first when asked to help those in need. I have put together several shows to raise funds for those who have received them.
His presence and time at Lakehouse Academy in Asbury Park were always welcome.
He was a member of the Asbury Park St. Patrick’s Parade Committee and helped organize the pre- and post-events to raise funds for the parade.
It was always a pleasure spending time with Sammy. I especially enjoy heading to Kim Mary’s in Asbury Park after a show with him, his business associate Judy, and usually band members and others to share snacks, cocktails, and good laughs. I got
He supported me when I did a TV show at Asbury Park. He enjoyed music and entertainment, so he stopped by shows I hosted that he wasn’t directly involved with.
He opened Marusco’s Tomato Pies in Asbury Park, an amazing pizzeria voted Best Pizza in Asbury Park in 2021. Of course, my meal was wasted and the staff enjoyed a special treat Sammy brought.
Sammy was a true legend in the business, spending his time and enjoying supporting local New Jersey artists. He is honored to have known him. To his beautiful wife Eileen, his family, friends and Judy at Sammy Boyd Entertainment, you all share my sympathies and gratitude for sharing Sammy with us.
