New Jersey Wind Farm Moves Forward

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has approved the purchase of 109.4 acres of land. This will enable expansion plans for the New Jersey wind farm in Lowers Creek, Salem County.

The New Jersey Wind Farm is the nation’s first infrastructure investment to provide a location for staging, assembly and manufacturing activities associated with offshore wind projects on the East Coast of the United States.

When fully built, the wind farm could create up to 1,500 manufacturing, assembly and operations jobs and return billions of dollars of economic growth to the New Jersey economy.

Wind Port Phase 1 will break ground in September 2021, with marshalling activities expected to begin in early 2024.

Purchase of 109.4 acres of property from PSEG Power’s subsidiary NDEV LLC will enable Phase 2 of the proposed project, expanding the port’s total footprint to over 220 acres and marshalling two wind projects can be supported at the same time. As up to three co-located manufacturing facilities.

“Today’s approval is another major step forward for the New Jersey wind farm and in achieving Governor Murphy’s goal of making New Jersey the engine room of the U.S. offshore wind supply chain.” NJEDA Chief Executive Officer said: Tim Sullivan.

“The ability to marshal two projects at once and add space for component manufacturing will drive job creation, small business opportunities, and all forms of ancillary economic activity locally and statewide. .”

Expanding marshalling capacity will also help alleviate the current shortage of fit-for-purpose port capacity across the region, Sullivan said, allowing states above and below the east coast of the United States to build wind power on time and in a cost-effective manner. He added that it will help him reach his goals.

The 109.4-acre site is located just north of the site NJEDA has leased from PSEG Nuclear to develop Phase 1 of NJ Wind Port. It is currently licensed as a Closed Disposal Facility (CDF) and the permitting process will soon begin to allow for expansion of the port. The purchase from NDEV LLC was made at a negotiated price of US$24.25 million.

NJEDA plans to begin tenant selection for plots of the property in the coming months.
