New York City has expanded its COVID-19 testing and treatment efforts by launching a mobile site where testers can prescribe medications to treat COVID-19 immediately after receiving test results.
The vans are some of the first in the country to offer both testing and prescribed treatment to those who qualify.
“Many patients came in, had symptoms and were tested,” said Prince Achoakawa, a physician assistant for the new mobile site. “Today, we have four patients out of four who have tested positive, and we have been able to prescribe medication for three of them.”
Paxlovid, the most prescribed treatment, is an oral medication that can be taken if you test positive for COVID-19. To be eligible, you must be 65 years of age or older or have a condition that increases your risk.
A primary care doctor in the Bronx says that for eligible patients, the drug not only makes them feel better, it can prevent trips to the hospital.
“It can save your life, but only if you take it fast enough,” Dr. Ted Long said. We can get a potential drug.”
Since its launch on June 30, Paxlovid has been prescribed to more than 1,000 New Yorkers. The treatment is free and no insurance card or proof of immigration is required.
