Open House Celebrates Baseball Legend & His Family’s Sporting Dynasty « The Official Website for the City of Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama – The Black Southern League Museum will host an open house event on Saturday, August 20, celebrating the life and legacy of baseball mogul Sam Hairston. The community is invited to come out and learn about Hairston and his baseball giants from 10am to 2pm. There are free guided tours, food trucks, and the appearance of the NSLM mascot “Barry.”

“It is important to honor Mr. Hairston and his groundbreaking contributions to baseball,” said Mayor of Birmingham Randall L. Woodfin. “Many athletes have enjoyed the fruits of his hard work and we are thrilled to be able to celebrate him at his one of the city’s crown jewels, the Black Southern His League Museum.”

Hairston was a Negro League and Major League Baseball player. He played for the Birmingham Black Barons and Indianapolis Crowns before joining the Chicago White Sox. Hairston also became the patriarch of a large family of professional baseball players. His sons Jerry Sr. and Johnny, and his grandsons Jerry Jr. and Scott all played in the major leagues. Son Sammy Jr. and grandsons Johnny Jr., Jeff and Jason played in the minor leagues.
