How much does the program cost?
There are no fees associated with the program, but there is a small fee associated with the APTA Residency/Fellowship Physiotherapist Intensive Application Service. Required to apply for the program. If selected for the residency program, she will be an employee of CVAHCS for the duration of her residency.
How much will I be paid?
Salaries are determined and preset by the VA Central Office. Program salaries are currently $$$. Salaries are subject to change or fluctuate as determined by the Academic Affiliation Office at the VA Central Office.
What kind of benefits are available?
Benefits include 13 days vacation and 4 hours sick leave for each pay period. It also includes 11 federal vacation days, health insurance, vision, and dental insurance.
How long is the program?
If the resident meets all the requirements outlined, the program must be completed in one year from the start date.
How many residents will you accept?
The Orthopedic Residency Program currently accepts one resident per year.
When does the residency program start?
The program will start in the first week of July and will be completed the following July.
How many hours per week do you spend treating patients?
Mentoring sessions with clinical staff average 4 hours per week, educational curriculum components average 4 hours per week, and individualized learning averages 2 hours per week. (These are approximations and actual mentoring and teaching research hours are subject to change at the department’s discretion.) The remaining hours are devoted to direct patient care. During this training period, it is highly anticipated that Residents will need to set aside time off work to prepare for board exams.
what about my schedule?
Schedules are subject to change based on departmental needs, but are typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm and may include weekends and weekends.
Am I guaranteed a job after completing my residency?
Residents in good standing will be employed for the duration of the residency program, but VA has no obligation to retain residents beyond the term of the residency program. Residents are encouraged to apply for vacancies after completing the residency program, if available.
When am I eligible to take the orthopedic certification exam?
Residents apply in July of the year they are enrolled in the residency program and take the exam in February or March of the following year. One year earlier than possible without completing the residency. Residents are responsible for all application and test fees.
