Panthers backup quarterback Sam Darnold was sidelined in Friday night’s preseason finale against the Bills with a left ankle injury.

Carolina named Baker Mayfield as its starting quarterback earlier this week, and it was a foregone conclusion that Darnold, who was the team’s starter for most of last season, would serve as his primary backup.
Depending on the severity of the injury, the depth behind Mayfield could be ambiguous. Rookie quarterback Matt Corral is likely to miss the season after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his left foot early in the preseason.
If Darnold is also expected to miss overtime, it will likely cement the future of quarterback PJ Walker, who was a candidate to be cut before Friday night. could be Mayfield’s primary backup.
