In the first preseason action of the 2022 NFL season, the New York Giants lead the New England Patriots 10-7 at halftime.
New York opened the scoring on the game’s opening possession as Daniel Jones and the first team offense marched down the field on a 13-play, 68-yard drive. However, that drive stalled in scoring territory as Kenny Goladay dropped a pass inside the 5-yard line and the Giants had to settle for a field goal. Saquon Barkley was heavily involved in his plans for the game, with four carries and his one reception. Gary Brightwell did most of the work for his second team behind Barkley. The highlight of the half was Richie James’ play. Richie James hooked the ball out of the air and pulled it down for a 26-yard gain. James added a touchdown grab on a toss from Taylor late in the drive.
New England’s touchdown came courtesy of rookie wide receiver Tycan Thornton, who crept along the backline in the end zone for a 2-yard pass from Brian Hoyer that gave the Patriots the lead. Thornton later added another reception with a checkdown from his fellow rookie Bailey Zappe. With the Giants’ second-team offense entering the game in the second quarter, Pat got a big play in the form of a fumble his recovery by Malcolm Butler. A catch-and-run attempt. (Johnson was heavily involved throughout the half, racking up seven receptions for 83 yards.)
Both teams looked somewhat sloppy in execution as they served 13 penalties in total, averaging 3.8 yards per rush and 5.4 yards per pass. Coming into the second half, some players on the roster are likely to get a little more action, and you might uncover a hidden gem or two along the way.
