‘Scream VI’ Director Hides In Subway Scene And Explains 50 More Easter Eggs (Exclusive)

Spoiler alert: This interview contains spoilers for Scream VI, which is currently in theaters.

Casual horror fans have probably noticed some iconic masks and monsters in the subway scene in “Scream VI.” There are Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Pinheads, and even modern staples like Florence Pugh’s floral dress from “Midsommar” and Jordan’s Chained People’s Group. Peale’s “we”. But costume designer Avery Pruce and directors Matt Vetinelli Orpin and Tyler Gillette went the extra mile to pack the latest “Scream” with his 50-plus Easter eggs, costumes, and blink-and-you’ll-miss references. I made an effort.

The “Scream VI” crew, consisting of Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmine Savoy Brown), and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) , tracking down Ghostface in New York City, Ethan Landry (Jack Champion) and Danny Brackett (Josh Segara) board the subway to confront the latest undercover killer. But now it’s Halloween, and trains are full of New Yorkers in spooky costumes.

To please horror fans, this is where most of the film’s references start popping up.Plewes estimates she made 200 costumes and set 140 extras for the Subway shoot. About 45 of those extras changed clothes after getting off the recreated train and reappeared on the subway platform in various costumes.

“It was the 25/75 rule, where 25% of the costumes were creepy at first and then got progressively worse,” Plewes explains.

As an homage to Wes Craven, who directed the first four “Scream” films, Plewes cast characters from the horror legend’s filmography for the subway scene.

“We started with Wes and looked at A-list horror villains, old and new, and what we feel is really relevant to people today who are part of the zeitgeist,” she said. Scream is meta and all about referencing the zeitgeist, look at Ari Aster and Jordan Peele and you had zombies in the subway from The Handmaid’s Tale. I wanted Mindy to be terrified, but also by patriarchal tropes that really freaked her out.”

To balance out the horror costumes on the subway, there were people dressed as real-life celebrities like Julia Fox, Jennifer Lopez, and David Bowie, plus regular New Yorkers without costumes, just let’s go home in peace. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also participated in the subway scene, albeit very briefly, with Chad Villella, co-founder of the production company Radio Silence and executive producer of “Scream VI.” Did.Bettinelli Orpin and Gillette dressed as Kurt Cobain stuck a fake meat cleaver in his head on the subway

“It’s probably a matter of 12 frames, if not less. A little flash, but we come in very easily,” they said. “

Plewes and the director included Wednesday’s Adams costume at the ‘Scream VI’ fraternity, not knowing Ortega’s star status would later blow up after playing the character on Netflix’s ‘Wednesdays’ series last year. They almost included an “X” poster in Tara’s room (Ortega had also appeared in the 2022 horror film) but decided not to.
