A second person has died from injuries sustained when a Megabus en route from New York to Philadelphia capsized on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge, New Jersey State Police said.
The accident occurred on the south side of the highway just before 7pm on Tuesday. The 56-year-old bus driver lost control of the bus and struck his truck with a Ford F-150 pickup traveling in the left center lane, state police said. Police said the bus hit a guardrail after ramming his F-150 and overturned on the entrance ramp to Thomas Edison’s service area.
Police said two passengers on the bus were killed and 16 others were injured. Police say her 59-year-old Cheryl Johnson, a Bronx resident, died at the scene. Her 66-year-old Cecilia Kiyanica of Woodbury was taken by helicopter to hospital, but she later died from her injuries.
Two passengers and a bus driver were seriously injured, and 14 others were not in a life-threatening condition, police said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the bus driver to lose control of the bus.
