The three contenders to start under center are Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and rookie Kenny Pickett. All three quarterbacks had their moments in the team’s preseason Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Trubisky finished with 63 passing yards and one touchdown on 4-for-7 passing. Rudolph passed for 93 yards and scored one touchdown on 9-of-15 passing. And in his NFL debut, Pickett finished with 95 passing yards and his two touchdowns on his 13-for-15 passing.
“The Herd” host Colin Cowherd argued that Pickett should be coach Mike Tomlin’s starting quarterback.

Pittsburgh selected Pickett with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. Pickett finished his 2021 college football season with 4,319 yards, 42 touchdowns, 7 interceptions and 165.3 quarterbacks. He also recorded 241 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns. Pickett finished third in the Heisman polls.
Pittsburgh has signed Trubisky, who was the backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills last season and the primary quarterback for the Chicago Bears from 2017-20, to a two-year, $14.3 million deal. Meanwhile, Rudolph has started in his 10 games with the Steelers in his four-year NFL career.
The Steelers finished second in the AFC North last season 9-7-1, but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild card round. Their offense completed 64% of passes (22nd in the NFL), averaged 222.2 passing yards per game (15th), totaled 23 passing touchdowns (tied for 16th), and 11 interceptions (7th). tied for less) and 9.5 yards per completion (last). and an 85.3 passer rating (24th).
Pittsburgh will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in the Week 2 preseason game on August 20.
