The Smithtown school superintendent has responded to allegations that a teacher at Smithtown East High School has been fired for being on the side of the LGBTQ community.
On Tuesday, former teacher Josh Tilton claimed in an Instagram post that he was denied tenure due to his personal beliefs and partnership with the LGBTQ community.
He also claims that an LGBTQ-friendly mural he created with his students was repainted when he was gone from the building.
“It was quickly covered up. There wasn’t even an effort to explain anything … It really bothered me, to be honest, because a lot of people loved him.”
Superintendent of Education Dr. Marc Secor issued a statement to News 12 about the controversy.
“While the district does not comment on former employees, it is important to know that the allegations made by this individual are highly concerning and inaccurate. It’s a shame he’s trying to tarnish our reputation as he remains a strong advocate for all students, including the LGBTQ population.
