A $100,000 grant helps fight gun violence in Peekskill.
The announcement was made at Peekskill City Hall on Thursday by an alliance of local leaders who came together following the shooting that left two people injured last month.
Funding came from the Community Violence Intervention Act passed by the state legislature last year and was secured by State Senator Pete Harkam, who represents the city.
It will be donated to Black Diamonds Academic Success, a nonprofit that mentors youth of color, and to the City of Peekskill.
Martin McDonald, Founder and CEO of Black Diamonds Academic Success Inc. said:
This grant supports programs that the city works with young men ages 18-24 to address mental health and help them find careers.
The funds will also help create programs through Black Diamonds that listen to concerns, strengthen youth leadership, and engage communities to prevent violence.
Youth Safety Focused Peekskill Middle School has a town hall meeting on Tuesday, August 23 at 5:30pm.
Residents are encouraged to participate.
