toms river, new jersey – A teenage boy has died on a New Jersey beach when police say the hole he was digging with his sister collapsed, trapping the two.
Around 4:00 PM, Toms River and nearby emergency responders arrived at the beach entrance near Seaview Road on the barrier island.
A 17-year-old girl stuck her head in the sand and was removed by emergency responders. Levi, 18, her older brother, identified as her Cavalry, died after paramedics said he was buried at least eight feet under the sand.
It took emergency responders 45 minutes to reach Levi and two hours to exhume him, officials said. In a Facebook post, Levi’s father described him as quirky, religious, and tech-savvy.
The family was visiting the Jersey Coast from Maine when the tragic accident occurred.
Levi Cavalry, 18, died Tuesday after authorities said a hole he and his sister were digging on a beach in New Jersey collapsed. His 17-year-old sister survived after her head was left in the sand.
Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill said a beach replenishment project and recent storms may have contributed to the collapse. Hill commented.
“The sand could have been softer. If you dig too deep you’ll end up with wet sand that acts almost like quick sand, or if you hit very light sugar sand it will pull you down,” says Hill. I was.
Lifeguards won’t be on duty until Memorial Day weekend, and digging holes above knee height is not allowed, the mayor said.
