Teenagers accused of using aerosol cans to set fire in Fairfield as part of TikTok trend

Fairfield police are seeking help from the public to identify a teenager they say used an aerosol can to set them on fire, as part of a TikTok trend.

Police said they handled about a dozen calls in the evenings this summer, mostly in parks and school parking lots in the town’s Fairfield Woods and Stratfield neighborhoods.

Police said the teenagers taped together cans of hairspray and sunscreen and lit them with matches or lighters.

“We think it’s the same group, a bunch of kids,” said Detective Jason Takakus.

Police say they have surveillance video of the teenagers buying aerosol cans at local pharmacies and at the scene of the fire. They are following up to identify leads.

The Fairfield Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation. The firefighter says property damage from the fire was minimal, but he wants teens to know how dangerous his TikTok trend can be.

“Hands, face burns and airway burns are very likely,” said Lieutenant Jeffrey Edmondson. “It can spread to bushes and then buildings.”
