The Bellwood School Board passes health and safety plans.News, Sports, Jobs

BELLWOOD — The school district’s health and safety plan was approved at a meeting of the Bellwood and Anti school boards on Tuesday, but before voting on the action, board members reviewed the language of the plan and how COVID We expressed concern as to whether plans could change if there were an increase. If school reopens this month.

To receive funding for the Elementary and Middle School Emergency Relief Fund, your school district must have a health and safety plan.

Board member Seth Sager was the first to speak out about plans being too specific and taking too long to manage.

“For example, it says to strictly adhere to the cleaning of door handles.” He said. “We are concerned that the attempts to tie specific responsibilities and accountabilities to school districts are too specific.”

Sager also asked about notes for notifying family members and close contacts if a student tests positive for COVID-19.

“It ties up a lot of administrative time, but is that still our plan?” he asked.

Middle school principal Don Wagner said some families in the community would like to be notified when their child has been in close contact with them because of a worsening medical condition.

“They fear their children will bring home COVID-19.” He said.

Last year, teachers told administrative staff which students had been in close contact with COVID-19-positive students, Wagner said.

These students were then informed that they had been in close contact with a positive patient and were encouraged to wear masks.

“We then notified the family through the school’s messaging system.” Wagner said. “It hurt a little bit, but it didn’t take long.”

Superintendent Edward Dysabato added that school districts will follow the latest Department of Health guidelines for the upcoming school year.

Disabato said there were rumors that the guidelines would be relaxed, which would make it easier for school districts to comply.

Sager next asked if there is an opt-in or opt-out system for parents who want to be notified when their child has been in close contact with a positive case.

He said that if parents could choose to opt out, it would be less of an administrative burden and less of a disruption to learning.

High school principal Richard Schreier said the district was able to reduce some of the work associated with contacting families about close contacts midway through the last school year.

“Before, I used to call every family member and talk to them privately, but now I just give them a piece of paper with the information.” He said.

Elementary school principal Matt Stinson said he called home to alert parents.

“There was a time when the student was asymptomatic, so it is highly likely that the victim was the parent.” He said.

Parents who know their children have been in close contact with someone who is COVID-positive can act quickly to mitigate the spread if they or their children show symptoms, he said. rice field.

COVID-19 appears to be lingering, with cases projected to rise when schools reopen.

In that case, director Kevin Ruensman wondered if the health and safety plan could be updated.

Wagner said the plan is a working document that can be amended if necessary.

“I’m with Kevin. It’s been lingering there. I’m afraid a situation could arise when we all get together all at once, but I hope it doesn’t.” I have.” Wagner said.

Board Vice President Kathy Burch said it’s important to be open and honest when providing information to parents.

“It’s up to them what they do with it. At least they have the facts to make an informed decision. I think that’s what every parent wants.” she said.

To receive ESSER funding, all school districts must follow health and safety guidelines, Disabato said, and plans must be updated every six months.

As a working document, he said a system is in place to change plans if a surge in cases becomes a reality.

“I hope not — none of us will.” He said.

This resulted in the plan being approved by an 8-1 vote, with Sager voting against it.
