Gasoline prices are coming down, which is good news for our wallets.
But does that mean the economy is recovering?
As FOX13 found out, the truckers who keep our stores stocked and the country on the move say it’s not that fast.
Every truck driver we spoke to said they were willing to pay more at places like the grocery store until the cost of diesel dropped dramatically.
Darius Smith, a truck driver in Jackson, Mississippi, says as long as diesel costs above $5 a gallon, the price consumers will continue to pay will remain the same.
Man, it’s ridiculous now. I don’t know how long the cargo will be able to move like this. Either it will have to be lowered or the cargo will need to be raised,” Smith said.
Horn Lake trucker Travis Blackmon says diesel costs need to be cut in half.
“It’s too high. We need to bring it down some to be better for the economy,” Blackmon said.
The national average for diesel is $5.06 per gallon, according to Triple A.
That’s down from June’s record high of nearly $5.82, but still holds above a year-old $1.76.
Tupelo driver Mack Dancy says diesel costs don’t have to be halved for consumers to benefit, but they still need to drop significantly.
“We need to drop about three dollars and fifty cents. It’s too expensive now,” said Dancy.
