Being on stage is an intimidating feat for most people. The mere thought of standing in front of an audience, or worse, performing, is enough to make an adult’s stomach twist and turn. For , the stage is where they can shine, and that was evident when both girls hit the runway during New York Fashion Week in February.
Davis and Brenner, 7th graders at Summit Middle School, love the stage. Brenner has been dancing since he was three years old, and Davis discovered musical theater when he was eight. Both spend hours each week after school, sometimes hours after school, honing their skills.
When she was around six years old, Brenner was headshot and that’s when she developed a secondary passion for modeling. She auditioned for her Denver-based Katie Andelman Model Team and began modeling dresses for her line of apparel Peach and Penny. Brenner said she liked the activity because she enjoys the adrenaline and because it gave her the opportunity to continue her acting practice.
“Dancing on stage needs to be more expressive, and on the runway, we need to move more. said Brenner.
Like Brenner, Davis gravitates to the stage. Her mother, Tonya Michelle, described her daughter as a shy wallflower, but she blossomed in front of audiences.
“For some reason, when she’s on stage, whether it’s theater or modeling, she’s just in her element,” Michelle said. “She’s a completely different person.”
Like Brenner, Michelle said Davis would do anything to make her first passion, musical theater, better. performances and has a growing relationship with the Colorado Children’s Theater in Evergreen. She also takes voice lessons and musical theater dance classes. When Davis heard from Brenner about the Katie Andelman Model Team, it seemed like another opportunity to help her practice.
Both girls had to first audition for the modeling team and then for the New York runway. I was. Now she and Brenner were to hit the streets together, along with 25 other girls from across the state who were also part of the model team. She said they would meet once a month in Denver to practice walking and to match the formal gowns she would show off in New York.
According to Michelle, the show, which took place at Sony Hall on February 10, ran alongside big league events during New York Fashion Week. Michelle said most of the attendees during the show were her grandparents and parents, but both girls, she said, loved the chance to walk the New York runway.
