Hayes Valley continues to return to its pre-pandemic vibrancy, with another empty space in the neighborhood opening to new tenants on Thursday.
The restaurant space previously occupied by brunch spot Stacks at 501 Hayes Street, on the corner of Hayes and Octavia, comes to life again this week. HazysThe Brixton, a new bar and restaurant from the team behind Hat Trick Hospitality.
The team describes it as a “comfortable space with a vintage edge”, “inspired by rock ‘n’ roll and neighborhood surroundings”. Rock and roll is also the theme of his two locations in Brixton.
Joining the team in the project’s consulting chef role is Joey Altman, an early Food Network personality who gained experience in the Stars restaurant kitchen under the Jeremiah Tower. He later became executive chef at He Ti Couz in the Mission district, and before moving to Oakland in 2008, he opened Miss Pearl’s Jam House, a Caribbean-themed restaurant at the Phoenix Hotel in the 1990s. The food menu includes dishes such as Oaxacan cheese fundido topped with carnitas. A steamed brisket sandwich with Sicilian pepperoncini and mustard aioli. Chicken wings with red chilli ginger lime glaze. Hamburger with brie cheese and garlic aioli. Pretzel knots with truffle cheese sauce.
As for drinks, there’s a list of 15 house cocktails created by Beverage Director Victor Picciardo, including Patrón Reposado Tequila, infused with jalapenos and habaneros, cucumber, lime, agave, and more.
Coriander; Naked & Famous is a combination of mezcal, yellow chartreuse, aperol and lime. The bar, like Anina across the street, also serves oversized cocktails served in large crystal dispensers.
The large 105-seat restaurant space was Stacks’ home for 13 years until 2020, when the brunch spot gave up its ghost early in the pandemic. People from Brixton last year.
Hazie’s opens Thursday, August 11, and will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to midnight. Friday and Saturday, 4:00pm to 2:00am. Sunday 4-9 PM The kitchen closes at 10 PM Wednesday-Saturday and 9 PM on Sunday. A weekend brunch will also be held at a later date.
