Loved ones remembered the firefighter who died at a fundraiser during a wake at Island Park on Wednesday.
Hundreds of firefighters from countless businesses came to pay their respects to Captain Michael Fisher, who died at the age of 38.
Those who have come out say the Long Island fire department is like family.
“…we are always here when one of us needs help and unfortunately this is one of them.
Fisher died last week while helping prepare for a clam-eating contest that was fundraising for a 7-month-old child with cancer.
Many of the firefighters who have come out have never met Fisher, but those who have said they know what a loss his death is.
“He lit up when he walked into the room. Pick me up,” says Desposito.
He is survived by two sisters.
At a ceremony Wednesday, Captain Fisher was posthumously promoted to honorary commissioner.
