No. 3 Ankeny Football beats Centennial on Friday
The Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial football teams once again reignited their rivalry when the two met on Friday night.
The Hawks hosted the Jaguars on September 2, defeating the Centennials 17-10.
The game was close throughout the first half, scoreless through the first quarter, and tied at 10 at halftime. Ankeny scored a touchdown in the third quarter to seal the win.
Senior quarterback JJ Cole had a good game leading the Hawks, finishing 17-for-26 with 212 yards and one touchdown.
Senior receiver Maddox Ward had a receiving touchdown and finished the day with one reception for 17 yards.
Senior Jamison Patton also had a strong game, rushing three times for 23 yards and a touchdown and catching eight receptions for 118 yards to lead all receivers. He also led the defense with seven total tackles.
Senior running back Easton Miller led the Jaguars and scored the team’s only touchdown. Miller finished the day with 10 rushes and 1 touchdown for 44 yards and 1 reception for 11 yards. He also recorded 7.5 total tackles, including 1 sack.
Junior quarterback Trenton Smith went 16-for-7 for 35 yards and rushed eight times for 40 yards.
Junior running back Elijah Miller had 16 rushes for 89 yards, while senior Brody Turgart led the defense with 9.5 total tackles.
Ankeny will face Dowling Catholics at Ankeny City Stadium on September 9 at 7:00 pm, while Centennial will face Walkie on September 9 at 7:00 pm at Waukee Stadium.

Women’s Cross Country Run at Ames
The Centennial and Ankeny girls’ cross-country teams competed in the Kirk Schmaltz Invitational on September 1 with mixed results.
In an 11-team field, the Jaguars were first overall with 54 team points and the Hawks were third with 98. The Valley were second with 75 points.
Senior Londi Kuas led the Jaguars in fifth with a time of 18:39.2, followed by sophomore Annika Morhauser in seventh with a time of 18:50.7.
Sophomores Bella Hodges and Julia Flick and freshman Kylie Patterson also made the top 20. at 19:51.
Leading Ankeny was sophomore Drew Beason, who finished ninth with a time of 19:27.4.
Sophomore Lauren Jackson and senior Briley Moyer also made the top 20, with Jackson at No. 18 and Moyer at No. 20. Jackson set his time of 19:52.9 and Moyer he finished with a time of 20:00.4.
The Jaguars will compete in the Cedar Rapids Invitational at the Seminole Valley Cross Country Course on September 8 at 4:40 p.m. Compete in the Cat Invitational.
